A Murder Most Foul

Last week, two of our dogs were poisoned and died.

Balto.

And Princesa, who was obviously the terror of the neighborhood.

Poisoning dogs is a common practice in the Peruvian campo.  My host mom said that it was for “envidia” (jealousy), but who can know for sure.  Balto would act aggressive to people passing by the house, but he never bit anyone and that was his job, anyway.  In reality, he was a very sweet boy who loved affection and would come with Elka and I on our morning walks.  It was a sad day.

It’s stuff like this that makes me want to get the hell out of this place sometimes.
